GUARD DOG/PROTECTION WORK:

For those of you interested in either purchasing a guard dog or having your own dog trained for protection work, we at Top Dawg Dog Training reserve the right to selectively choose which dogs and owners are eligible for training. Unfortunately, not all dogs have what it takes to be guard dog trained, especially if their drive and/or obedience is below an expected level. Because of this, we have specific requirements before all dogs are accepted to participate in any of our guard dog/protection work programs. Owners are also subject to evaluation in regards to our decision making process. Both the Owner and the Dog must meet and excel in a specific criteria before enrollment options are even considered.

Before beginning training, all dogs are first tested for a stable disposition. Chosen dogs cannot show signs of nervousness, unnecessary aggression, or shyness. These dogs will be selected for confidence, intelligence, and trustworthiness around all people and situations. All Guard Dog dogs should be able to be pet by strangers, brought to the groomer and interact as a normal family pet. Aggression shall only be displayed when the protect command is given or if the dog or owner is faced with a direct threat.

PROTECTION TRAINING LEVELS:

LEVEL 1 - Deterrent Dog

The level 1 dog is trained to show an aggressive display on command. This dog will lunge, show teeth, and bark aggressively at the end of the leash towards any aggressor who tries to approach once his "protect" command is given. Weapons, yelling, or other forms of intimidation will not cause this dog to back down. Although this dog will most likely bite if an aggressor physically challenged the dog, the level 1 dog is not specifically trained how to most effectively fight the aggressor as is the level 2 dog. The level 1 dog's main purpose is as a deterrent (which is usually enough for most situations).

LEVEL 2 - Defense Dog

The level 2 dog will show the same aggressive display as the level 1 dog on command. This dog has also been trained how to most effectively win a fight with aggressors who physically challenge it. This dog is trained to use the bone crushing power of the back of its jaw by biting deep instead of with just the front of its mouth. The dog has also been specifically trained to counter any attempt by an aggressor who strikes or tries to beat off the dog by biting deeper and harder or shaking the part of the body held in the mouth. The dog is trained to release its bite on command.

LEVEL 3 - Offense Dog

The level 3 dog has all the training of the level 2 dog, but has the option of being able to be deployed off leash to pursue and capture a fleeing person or a threat from a distance. The "offense dog" is trained to use its body to knock down and hold onto a challenger even while wearing a muzzle. This dog will also release its bite on command from a distance.

OBJECT GUARD -

The dog is taught to remain near an object that you command it to guard. If anyone touches that object the dog will attack. The dog can be taught to automatically release for the action of the owner's choice.

Tips From the Pros

When coming across an aggressive dog, be sure to greet the dog with continuous exaggerated blinks. Never look them square in the eyes, for they might perceive you as a threat and/or feel like you are challenging them. This will signify to the dog that you have respectfully come in peace and intend on causing no harm!!!
